Hands In Christ Deaf Ministry
New Beginnings Sign Choir

Welcome
We are excitied to announce that starting November 8th at 7:00 pm a new and exciting choir will have a new beginning at Hands In Christ Deaf Ministry.

A wide range of repertoire will be part of the “New Beginnings” Sign Choir at First Baptist Church Lavaca, from gospel, contemporary praise & worship, classics to fresh upbeat arrangements. You are welcome to join us for musical sign skill building, fellowship, and just plain fun.

Do you desire to sing/sign songs of praise and worship in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Requirements include the wiliness to learn, love for the Lord, sincerity and the enjoyment of music. The choir will provide music for worship at Hands In Christ Deaf Ministry and FBC church activities.

The Choir is open to Deaf, Hearing, Hard of Hearing adults and kids who love to sing/sign praise to the Lord. Grades 3 to 12 - Adults from 18 to 80 are welcome. We are looking for creative and committed people to join our team in the areas of sound and visual arts, music and drama.

Rehearsals are on Thursday nights at 7:00 pm. Location will be in the Hands in Christ Deaf Ministry building. You do not have to be an experienced signer to join this group! We'd love to have you join us.

Sign Language and Music
The Deaf feel the vibrations of music with their bodies, their eyes capture the visual beauty of the signs as hands fly through the air. The hearing are given a visual aspect to words they have never experienced before, adding an artistic and moving expression to the music of worship.

Drums and tambourines, are a few of the instruments, that let the Deaf feel the vibrations with their hands. Every aspect of music from sound to visual expression is used to bring the music alive for the hearing and deaf.

Drama, costumes, videos, and lighting are added to bring another visual aspect to the music.

Also our vision is to offer an integration between deaf and hearing cultures, using the visual language of American Sign Language, the basis of deaf culture, and fuse that with music, expressive praise, and worship.

American Sign Language is not simply a translation of English, is its own language. It is movement, expression, and feeling. More expression is given through sign than through the spoken word.

Poetry and sculpture in the air is one way sign language has been described. The use of sign language during worship can bring a new depth of understanding to the spoken word.
