Hands In Christ Deaf Ministry
About Us
Hands In Christ Deaf Ministry at First Baptist Lavaca is committed to bringing the word of God to the Deaf. Our ministry has also made the commitment to include all aspects of hearing loss; hard of hearing, late deafened, deaf.
Both the Deaf and Hearing communities are faced with a difficult challenge - to overcome communication, cultural, and attitudinal barriers which separate deaf and hearing persons. Encouragement and support of the ASL Language, and Deaf culture is also a part of our ministry.
Deaf and hearing people need each other. Our ministry works to provide an organizational structure and support system within which the deaf and their hearing advocates can work together to enable deaf and hearing persons to meet each other's spiritual needs.
The Deaf at First Baptist Church Lavaca are accepted as part of the whole church family. We celebrate diversity and include deaf persons in full Christian fellowship.
Many hearing adults have never known a deaf person. We support the need of deaf mentors who understand their need for information, experience, time and support to adjust to the unique language and culture of the Deaf community. We encourage deaf volunteers to teach ASL and deaf culture to hearing persons, especially to children who will grow up to be friends with deaf persons in their own families, churches and communities.
We Believe:
 | An interpreter is not enough. | | Numbers are not important - people are!
| | Deafness is not a handicap
The real handicap is not knowing Jesus Christ
|
 | One dedicated person can reach untold others...You can make a difference! |
Remember....deaf people are the 4th largest unreached people group in the world. There are approximately 413 million deaf and hard of hearing people living in the world. Of those, the United States has approximately 17 million deaf and hard of hearing people.
To create deaf leaders and share a common community.
Our prayer is to raise up leaders in our deaf congregation, and going out into the community to share ourselves, and the news of our savior.
