Loving husband, father, and my best friend. 1942-1993
"Dedicated to all Cancer patients and the wonderful Hospice programs everywhere".
On the table I sit losing small strips of my dignity as you stand towering over me. I wish you would not talk over me, I'm right here and losing my dignity.
Lay back, spread your legs please, on you side, would you cough for me please. Stripped of my clothes, paper gowns to be thrown away, walks down the cold long halls, loosing my dignity.
Fear of the unknown, questions and answers I need, but you are in such a rush. What is being done to me? Won't you please explain it to me? Fear of death and pain creeps around me. Please won't you talk to me.
Barren rooms, one chair for visitors-a limit of two if you please. I want to go home! I need my family around me, they give back to me, my dignity.
I am not a child, I know what I need. I want my home and family with me. My bed and I are friends, and next to me are all the things I need.
Early morning, movement around me, a quiet rush, my doctor has come to see me. Sorry, he says, just a few months and you will cease to be. Any questions for me? Write them down, please. I'm in a rush-due in surgery.
Taking back my dignity I pack to leave, nurses, doctors all rush in to see me. You can't leave! You will die! I smile and leave with my dignity.
My family around me, sharing stories and laughter, this is how it should be. Holding hands with those who love me, no needles and tubes, dying with my dignity.
It's now up to God and me.
No house calls from my doctor, he is just to busy for me. I have no fear, my family and God always have time for me. I've taken back my dignity, my Bible, God and family share it with me.

Should you go first and I remain,
to walk the road alone,
I'll live in memory's garden dear,
with happy days we've known.
